I bought my iguana on February 1, 2007 and have been giving him collard greens, mustard greens, brocolli, mango, banana, and green beans. He has not ate or drank anything since I got him and he just lays in one spot in his cage. He is approximately 18 inches from nose to tip of tail. Any suggestions?

There are a few things that could be putting a damper on your new Igs spirit. First how big is the enclosure they need a lot of room. for and 18" Baby i would sugguest at least a 40 Gallon enclosure, probably your best bet would be a 55 Gallon. Second would have to be the temperature. Your Iguana will want to have the minimum temperature durring the day of at least 88 degrees, with a maximum of no more than 110. At night some where around 70 degrees is sutable for them. Next is the humidity level. Iguanas are Tropical herbaviors. So they need to have high humidity some where above 70%. You are feeding your Iguana the right foods, but make sure that they are small enough for your iguana to get a full stomach and have them eat as much as possible.

If you need any other Iguana advice or any help at all please e-mail me at xrose_of_shyronx@yahoo.com. I am always happy to help.

Good Luck

What temperature is the cage? Iguanas need a warm spot of about 90-95, with the rest of the cage 80-85. The best way to get this temperature is with a heat light or ceramic heat emitter. You shouldn't use a heat rock, because these only warm the animal if it sits on top of it - these can cause burns and electric shock, so are a bad idea!).

They also like high humidity. Try using a spray bottle to mist the inside of his cage. See if he will lick the water as it trickles down a wall.

It can also make a difference what time of day you feed them. Since they need the warmth to digest their food, most plant-eaters eat early in the day, so they have the rest of the day to digest their food. It sounds like you're giving him a good variety of food, but I'd go easy on the broccoli.

I think these suggestions will help your immediate concerns. You can take a look at these websites for more info on their care:

Iguanas need a 8.0 UV light and a heat source(no heat rocks) I use a Ceramic Heat Emitter. The basking temps should be 95-100 and normal temps of 75-85. You should give them warm baths everyday or every other day. They need a cage not a tank.

You should be feeding him 45% leafy greens like Collard, mustard, dandelion, escarole NO lettuces!

45% hard veggies like orange fleshed squashes(acorn, pumpkin, butternut, sweet), sweet potato, parsnips, bell peppers, asparagus, peas, green beans NO broccoli or cauliflower

45% fruit , mangos, papaya, figs, cantaloupe, cactus pear, strawberries, raspberries

NO ANIMAL PROTIEN! THAT MEANS NO BUGS, MEAT, CHEESE OR EGGS!

trying baby food is a good idea to see if he will eat (try to find something organic without a bunch of chemicals in it and stay with vegetables)

it sounds like u bought a "lemon" iguana. take ur iguana back to wherever u bought it & demand a refund. buy another iguana somewhere else b/c chances r if this one came from an iguana community, they might all be sick.
