The Soviet Union kept up an horrendous and costly war against Germany from the East, draining German troops, equipment and supplies. Eisenhower repeatedly refused to supply troops to the eastern front. USSR lost 20 million during the war.

There wasn't all that much left when the Allies invaded on D day.

And Japan was fighting a losing battle since the Battle of Midway in 1942.

The A-bomb was not used in Europe.

Other than D-Day, the only major turning point of the war on the Western Front was the 'Battle of the Bulge'. After that, it was pretty much all over but the crying for the Axis.

On the Eastern front, it was the battle of Stalingrad.

Pretty much after that, the Axis ran out of gasoline, supplies, ammo...everything...they were fighting a retreating war.

The A-bomb didn't turn the war, we were winning against Japan, but it was slow, long and bloody. We only dropped the bomb to bring about a speedy victory by beating Japan into submission. We still would have won. Don't forget the Battle of the Bulge, that was another important victory.

In the end, it was the injection of troops and materials by the US to help the other Allies that helped win. Germany was just wasy overmatched in terms of numbers and supplies. They lost only because they ran out of everything, including able men to fight. At the end adolescents and elderly men were fighting for Germany. If Germany had an equal number of troops, supplies, etc.; they would likely have won. Their tropps were for the most part better equipped and trained than our troops who came through the draft. German soldiers had generally trained longer.

The Germans were spread pretty thin trying to take Moscow. There's a whole lot of Russia and a whole lot of Russians. Russia also has pretty nasty winters. When we invaded Normandy the Nazis couldn't fight a war on two fronts.

The U.S. wasn't able to do anything. Whatever gains were attributable to a series of propitious flukes. They couldn't even find the Japanese fleet!
