I am 23 and a little under 5'8", I've never thought of myself and overweight, but I've never been completely satisfied with my body either. I weight has flucuated between 140-150 since I was about 15. According to a website I was at, my BMI was 22, which I believe is pretty average.

Friends were over a few days ago, and somehow got on the weight topic, a friend said 'what size are you a 4?' I laughed and said "well...these are 9's, so no!"
Just wondering what a good weight for me is, and if 8/9 is a large size.

22 for a bmi is great! if your bmi is over 25, then you're over-weight, if it's under 19, you're way too skinny so 22 is perfect! but if you think you have a bit of a tummy then a small diet won't hurt you but never go under a bmi of 19! you don't want to fall in the horrible trap of anorexia...

A lot of it depends on your body shape and bone structure, of course. I'm 5'8" and I've been everywhere from 115 (way too skinny, but I was healthy) to 170 (too much, in my opinion). I'm around 165 now and I'd love to get back down to 140 or so. Even when I was at my skinniest, though, I was a size 8, maybe 6. Last time I tried on clothes, I was a size 14, maybe (I didn't want to even try a size 16). Two people can be the same height and weight and wear very different sizes!

An 8/9 sounds like a normal size. The only one that would have a problem with it are those little twigs that are a size zero. Plus if they asked you if you were a size 4 that is a compliment.
According to the United Health Foundation for 5' 8" - 130 lbs. - 169 lbs. is healthy weight. 170 lbs. - 199 lbs. is overweight. 200 lbs. - up is obese.
So if you are 140 -150 you are pretty much perfect. Congratulations!

You've got longer legs though, and usually sizes like 1's, and 3's (which are usually the same as 2's and 4's) run shorter in the legs, so many taller women either have to find special jeans, or has to buy bigger sizes. I think a BMI of 22 is a good bmi, it's healthy, not close to 24 which is a warning sign for becoming close to being overweight.

At 5' 8'' and 150 lb, your BMI is 22.8, pretty good. A BMI between 18.5 and 25 is normal; less is thin; more is fat. More about BMI in the sources.

And don't worry about sizes; at 8 or 9, you probably are already slender, so the joke about "size 4" actually compared you to an anorexic model (only one would use clothing so small). Pride yourself, you are way healthier than a anorexic model!

you are DEFIANTLY not over weight!

I'm 5 " 6 and 145 - and I'm happy with my body i dont feel im overweight --- so

your 5"8 and about that weight - so you should have a very pretty body

if you go to google and enter something like " check body weight " or like " BMI masses " there are some sites that will explain in detail your bmi and what you need to do and eat bla bla.

i believe i checked mine on a www.lifetimefitness.com -- but try the google thing - its probally easier. Try different sites too - because like i said different sites could give you better information.

Google search for Body Mass Index

The clothing sizes are more dependent on body type as well as total weight. Why did your friend think that size 4 is a good size for a person 5'8" tall?

It's tricky just because muscle weighs a lot more than fat. You may be 145 and a size 9, a friend of yours may be 135 and a size 12. It just depends on where the weight is on your body.

A BMI of 22 appears to be in the normal weight range for your height. I have attached the official guidelines for the Dept of Health.
