I recommend The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie and Don Quixote by Cervantes.
Also you should check out The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. I'm not sure if you'd like it or not, but its short and certainly worth a shot.
One Hundred Years of Solitude was one of my favorite books. Haven't read Les Miserables(Ive seen it, although not live, and loved it) yet but I am planning on it some time this year.

I love Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and am in the middle of War and Peace--also a wonderful story (stories, there's so many!). Willa Cather's novels are also great--My Antonia, Death Comes to the Archbiship, The Professor's House, etc. Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is also a classic story with many more layers than you realize the first read through. Those are a few of my favorites...
