I don't believe every McDonalds is putting these DVD rental machines in all of their restaurants; franchisees have the option of placing them in their restaurants but I don't believe they are required to do so. The franchisees have a lot of money invested in their restaurants. Start-up alone is in the range from half a million to a million for each restaurant. So if they have another way of bringing revenue in to keep their operation going, so be it!

Personally, I don't see how this could be a feasible operation. I wouldn't go rent a movie from McDonalds unless I ate there frequently (which I don't; eating their food is slow death, IMHO). A-HA! That's who they're catering to; the frequent McDonalds diner. If he/she doesn't drop dead right away from eating crappy McDonalds hamburgers, a movie could be enjoyed every night whilst sticking one's head in the McD's feed bag.

If your assertion is true, it would ultimately be a McWal-Mart at some point, when the 2 companies merge to really take over.

why not buy stock in the company and share in reaping the benefits. maybe someone thought that they would be helping out busy families if they could pick up a movie for the evening when they pick up the meal too.
