In ODI cricket no-one is a more proficient opener than Sanath Jayasuriya. His ability to hit a ball clean out of the ground and his capability for improvisation are legendary. He consistently dominates bowling attacks around the world with his agressive strokeplay. Other contenders for this spot include Chris Gayle and Adam Gilchrist, who are two of the most powerful hitters of the ball in world cricket.

Choosing the best test opener is more difficult. Graeme Smith is a fantastic opener, with a long career ahead of him. At 22 he became the youngest captain in South African cricket history, and 3 double hundreds in quick succession soon after his debut cemented his place in the side. India's fine number one, Virender Sehwag, has a great technique and can pull and cut better than most cricketers in the world. Herschelle Gibbs is another underrated player, but he is a terrific batsman; the speed of his hands is hypnotic, frequently allowing him to hook off the front foot and keep out surprise lifters. His trademark is the lofted extra-cover drive, hit inside-out with the certainty of a square cut. However, the best opening batsman in the modern game has to be Matthew Hayden. Hayden has long been feared worldwide as a fantastic driver through the covers, while his strength on the pull is phenomenal. He has the ability to dominate any bowler in the world, and is proficient against both spin and pace.

P.S. Haven't you asked this question already, and given me a best answer?

Being an australian, i would have to say that in test matches, no one (could) beat the partnership of Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer.

In One-Day Internationals, I would have to also say Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist !!!!!!!!!

My uncle. He scored 38 runs in one over! The other team captain asked if he will take 200 runs and retire willingly? My uncle is a monk and lives in the Himalayas.

Greenidge and Haynes. At their time there were more world class players in every department - batting, fielding, bowling, wicket keeping etc. It was hard to stand out but they always did.
