I fear there are a few answers to this question. also they may be a bit complicated/ long winded to explain with a "message".

So I suppose you r using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)?
Theoretically, everything should be easy, but in practise, many things can go wrong.U didn't give much details, (type of lan, is there a router or direct link...). So I can give u few important points..
If you have any old connections, delete them
If your PC's are connected through router, log in to your router and disable DHCP
First run wizard on host, and only then on client ("slave")
Check if both systems have sp2
if it still doesn't work, download the latest drivers for your Network cards...

I don't know what kind of connection you are trying to set-up,however setting up an Internet connection those not require LAN or WAN stuff because they are already set-up for you - all you need to do is click on (start, control panel and click on network connection wizard) from there on the basic things you have to do is to verify which type of connection you want to set up?which would probably be broadband.Your username and password given to you by your ISP,POP3,SMTP etc if you follow up properly you won't have a problem.Hope i understand your question - good luck
