I didn't feel anything when I had oral surgery and they gave me that stuff. It just felt like I was dreaming and the world was spinning, but it was kind of a pleasant feeling, like I was halfway awake or something.

It is frightening at first if you're very young, but the dentist puts a rubber mask on your nose and tells you to breathe through your nose. It does not cover both your mouth and nose, so that you need not get panicky and fear being suffocated - you could still breathe through your mouth. The gas is odorless, but you may experience a smell that reminds you of rubber bands. You will not feel like laughing, you will feel little for the first few minutes. Then you may feel as if your feet want to float up off the dentist's chair, or that you have become much lighter and much calmer. The dentist will be right there and will talk to you, telling you exactly what to expect and explaining what's happening. He will use other means to ensure that you are pain-free, and will tell you as he undertakes each step in the dental procedure you will be getting. You will not go to sleep or pass out, and in fact will be surprised at how easy it all was once it's all done. You may feel a bit light-headed when first you go to sit up and then stand, so if the dentist tells you to take it slow, do so. By the time you're out of the office, you will feel just fine.

The one time that I had nitrous oxide I didn't like it because it smelled funny. But then again, I was a young child. Now, that said, I didn't feel the drill at all -- and this was easily 30 years ago when the drills weren't as refined as they are now. I'd say that if you want to try gas, go for it!

i've only got gas once. and the dentist asked me how i felt and i said "Normal". and then he said his tank must be empty. what a goof! so i had to get the whole face-numbing be a frozen face zombie for a day shot to get the tooth worked on.

after that--i just ask the dentist for valium before hand. he writes me a scrip for a pill or two--i take them before the appointment and everyone is happy.

i got laughing gas a few times. its pretty weird. the person above me described it the best. u dont actually laugh, so i dunno why they call it "laughing gas". the gas makes u feel kinda whoozy, n everything feels like a dream. for me, all the voices echoed n the dentist equipment noises kinda sounded like music lol. my dentist asked me stupid questions while he was pulling out my teeth like, "do u play soccer? my son does!"
