A veterinary technician is a lot like a registered nurse. However, not only do we provide nursing care for our patients like an RN, we also take x-rays, draw blood, run tests on blood for CBCs and chemistry panels, perform dentals, place animals under anesthesia and monitor them during surgery, and assist the veterinarian.

To be a veterinary technician, you have to be a graduate of an AVMA accredited program. A list of these can be found at www.navta.net. That site can also give you a lot of information about veterinary technology. There are both 2 year and 4 year programs for veterinary technology.

All states are different in licensing. Depending on the state you live in, you will be an RVT (registered veterinary technician), a CVT (certified veterinary technician), or an LVT (licensed veterinary technician). Each state has rules and regulations regarding what you need to be licensed such as state or national examinations, but all require that you are a graduate of an AVMA accredited program.

I hope this helps!

There are many schools out there.

However, you have to look at PRICE of school, versus PAY when hired.

A certified vet tech makes more money then a person just walking in the door. I was a walk-in, and I made some money, but my pay wasn't that much lower then the certified vet tech.

They got to do more things, but the list wasn't that much bigger then my own.

Your school should also be accredited. No point in paying a lot of money to be a vet tech, if your credits don't transfer to another school for higher education (masters, etc).

You mainly have too look at whether you want to be a vet or not.
If so, becoming a certified vet tech and getting hands on will definitely help your path to becoming a Vet.

A veterinarian is a well being care provider and the veterinary technician is the equivalent of a nurse, both good careers. yet bear in mind, if this concerns to you, the veterinarian (well being care provider) makes a lot more desirable funds than the technician.

Usually schools have programs. I was a vet nurse for a year and realized the field was not for me. Some places have 1 to 2 year programs. Depends on where you go. Good Luck!
