If little boys express themselves "in the open" their mothers are duty bound to quash and quell their exuberance and adventure (out of fear for their safety and well-being, no doubt) because mothers know that they are responsible for their boys becoming men. Mothers attempt to guide their sons with a steady litany of preliminary cautions:
"You can't . . .
"You mustn't . . .
"You shouldn't . . .
"Be careful . . .
"What will the neighbors think . . .
"It's too dangerous . . .
"I'll tell your father . . .
"I'll have to call the cops . . .
"Who do you think you are . . .
"You'll get a whipping . . .
"You must be kidding . . .
"Not while I'm alive . . .
"You'll go blind . . .
