If little boys express themselves "in the open" their mothers are duty bound to quash and quell their exuberance and adventure (out of fear for their safety and well-being, no doubt) because mothers know that they are responsible for their boys becoming men. Mothers attempt to guide their sons with a steady litany of preliminary cautions:
