My 3 yr old son is getting too big to ride in front of me, and was thinking about getting one. Are they worth it, or more of a pain?
Thanks in advance.

Tried letting him ride the pony, with his helmet, boots, snowpants for padding, and he fell off before the pony even moved, So, letting him ride solo is not an option at this point. My mare that he rides with me now on is a pretty laid-back girl, nothing phases her. just sticking him behind the saddle and having him hang on hurts him, and tried tying a towel rolled up, but he panicked, lol. I was just thinking one of these things would give him a little more mental security, more than anything.

My friend used one,but found her daughter did not like it much. It was bumpy and her arms were too short to hang on well, plus she could not not see over mom very well.
She bought her a POA! After working with it and trying it out on lead line, had an absolute blast:) My vote is thumbs down for the buddy seat, based on experience.

*EDIT ok pony is out lol. Snow pants are real slippery? ...I called my friend, and she said Buddy DID give her daugher more security, and that it was Mom that wanted a pony! LOL (they drive it now)
Cheers to you for caring to ask, and for taking the next generation on happy rides! She suggested you could also/insted buy longer latigo strings to give a hand hold behind the saddle, and tie the two sets together,a nice handhold.Or,you can salvage an old rein and wear it like a big belt around your waist, for a good hand grip. Then add a average banna bag(with nice kid snaks) to keep your son's front padded.Soon you will be riding everywhere until its time to load up his show horses :D
We both wish you the best in riding with your child!

Make sure your horse is broke to it. The buddy seat looks comfortable but not very safe if your horse bolts or starts bucking. You wouldn't want to frighten your son of horses. If your horse is OK with having people riding behind you give it a try and see if your son likes it.

I've seen them used but never used one myself. Make sure your horse is really okay with it first, dont want a crow-hopping horse to toss your child. When I was little I use to sit behind my mom and hang onto her waist.

I've never owned one, nor have I seen anyone use one yet. Just have your son just behind you and hold onto your waist or the cantle. Make sure your horse is broke well.
