K can be 1000 (decimal) or 1024 (binary)
M can be 1,000,000 or 1,045,876

The binary values apply to computer memory because that is the way it is addressed. As others have said, hard disk capacity is usually quoted as decimal. Computer clock speed in MHz, uses 1,000,000. In other cases on computers, such as quoting speed in MBytes Per Second, you never know unless told.

Some of the replies misquote b for bytes. The convention is to use B for bytes and b for bits, as often used in the communications arena.

Its 1024, and 1024 Mb = 1GB. Drive sizes are always quoted at 1000, thats why when you buy a 500Gb drive and format it under XP it reports 460Gb, because XP works it out properly at 1024.

Drive manufacturers try to con us.
