I, too, have severe allergies and find that Biz bleach alternative doesn't irritate my skin. It also leaves both whites and colors bright while it does an excellent job removing stains. Unlike the oxy type cleaners, it won't make white spots or discolorations on garments when concentrated amounts get on the fabric. In addition, I always add a drop or two of Mrs Stewart's Bluing as it really does add extra whiteness.

For dingy whites, I like to soak my whites in Clorox version of Oxi-Clean. It's a powder in a little tub that looks almost like Oxi-clean and it says Oxygen action on the label. Consumer reports says it cleans the better than Oxi-clean.
I think the real trick to making whites "WHITE" and bright is blueing, which can be added to the whites during a regular wash as well. White isn't really white, it has shades of blue in it, and the blueing makes whites appear really bright white. Not if they aren't clean though. You still have to get them clean. For everyday wash, you can use a non-clorine bleach like Clorox Chlorine free bleach for colors. You just add in it with your detergent. You can also buy your detergent with it already in there.

Try detergents that have a bleach alternative (it will say so on the box or bottle).
There is an item called "bluing" (no it doesn't turn clothes a blue color) but I don't know if it is even made anymore. Check your local supermarket.

you can do it the old way: boil them. really, thats what people did before bleach. you just boil the water and put the white clothes in, let them be in there until they look clean to you and dry them however you want.
PS: that will take away the durability of your clothes though.. so i wouldn't do it too often or for way too long.
