Lay your card in the center of the piece of paper you want to make into an envelope. Lightly trace around your card with pencil Use a ruler and measure about 1/8" to 1/4" bigger than the card. Draw another line around the card at that distance. Lay the ruler along the line and extend the line out well beyond the square, a little more than half again the length or width of the card. (If the card is 4"x6" each line should extend a bit more than 2" on the short sides and 3" on the long sides.)Cut this shape out. It should look a little bit like the Red Cross symbol. Fold the 'arms' in and then trim them so they taper nicely. You can trim them diagonally, like a commercial envelope, or in a semi-circle by tracing the curve of a plate or saucer, or just leave them square and round the corners. You decide.
Of course, if you want diagonal points like a commercial envelope, make it differently. Lay the card diagonally in the center of the paper, and then just fold the points in to fit. This one doesn't look anything near as nice as the other one, though.

An envelope is fairly easy to make. Use an envelope you already have as a pattern. Unfold it and lay it out flat, so that you can see how it was made.
Make adjustments to fit the size of the card you have made. Use some type of heavier paper to make it. Regular writing paper will be too flimsy.
If possible use a paper trimmer - usually available for free use around the photocopy center in places like Office Depot - to get nice clean cuts.
Fold the envelope - using a straight edge and something like a round pen barrel to get a crisp edge - following the pattern and glue it together with a glue stick or some Elmers glue.

Very carefully take apart an envelope that you already have and use it as a pattern. I used to do this all the time when I was in high school and wrote to many friends. I'd use Rolling STone magazine pages or something similar. Just don't use homemade envelopes out of magazine pages for mailing. It makes the post office cranky because it jams their machine. I used to get yelled at all the time. LOL.

You can either use an unfolded envelope as a pattern to draw round or you can search Google for envelope patterns (there are some online free to download) There are also envelope patterns to print off in a lot of desktop publishing programs.
Extra tip - if you want to be even more creative in making it ALL your own homemade work, you can have a try at your own handmade paper making!! I've just been trying some myself and have been pleased with the results! (again - a search on google will give you plenty of websites with instructions on how to make your own papers!)
