I've seen live videos of Metallica playing. In his solos, Kirk is switching from picking to tapping and then picking again. But, how can he play the fast riffs without a pick?

It's not that hard at all. It is a variation on a technique called "legato". which means roughly just pulling or tapping the strings with your left hand or non picking hand. It's an easy way to play fast and I can do it till my fingers fall off. Kirk uses a sh*t pile off gain on his amp, plus he has the annoying habit of punching more gain in with his wah pedal. He uses the wah on virtually every solo. It gives him the gain and sustain to be able to play very fast without picking every single note. Kirk is at best a mediocre lead guitar player. He may know more than he shows on his recordings, and he can play other peoples stuff, but left to his own devices his lead playing becomes boring to listen to after awhile because he doesn't deviate much from playing pentatonic, both major and minor scales. Again it's easy to play fast with nothing more than trying to fireball your way thru pentatonic scales. If you want to hear some fast, exotic scaling check out Marty Friedman of Cacophony, Megadeth fame. This guy is awesome and Kirk would probably make Marty a good roadie.

A) Who says he does, and B) with his fingers, as guiatrs originally were played.
I switch from tapping to picking all the time, you just slide the pick into your hand and then back again, big deal. Or you tao with fingers that you don't use to hold your pick, whichever.But you can also play riffs and everything by fingerpicking, just listen to some country players, they're faster than metal gutarists can think and they all play fingerpicking. He is fairly good, but nothing special, you know? If you want to hear blazing speed, get early Al DiMeola or John McLaughlin - even Vai and Satriani have NOTHING on those guys, and Kirk would maybe be good enough to carry their guitars around.

It's all in the left hand. I can take my right hand (picking hand) out of the whole equation and play power chords, fast scalar lines , and pull offs, all day - then again i have been playing for many years and some stuff is just natural for me.
