make adjustments for yourself so that you don't turn out (a generalizing, racist, backstabbing, closed-minded, druggy, drunk, woman abuser, all around self-serving jackass) and then you're all alone with nothing in common with most of your family. What now??

Is a person who tries to better himself or herself lost in a case like this?

It's a sad state of affairs and all to common to live in an extremely dysfunctional family. First off it's never too late for anyone to better themselves...no matter their age and always live with hope that things will get better. One things for sure you cannot choose who you were born too and as a "youngster" there's not a lot of choices. But since you recognize these traits that you have listed are wrong, it's up to you to break the cycle and be a better person. Once exposed to all that crap it may be to your benefit to get help, because it may follow you and affect your future. It could be hard to recognize later. It's sounds like you are on the right path - good luck!

nope not lost at all.. that person whould have to find new friends and start moving away from the family and explain why to the family but most familys like that will never understand! it sucks!
and I love my family but i'm not like them!
I still talk to them and do dinners on ocation but i don't make it a habit of calling and hanging out with them!
attitudes rub off most the time so if your hanging with them you will have there attitude soon mind set!
good for you to wake up to that.. now just make new friends that will help you maintain this state of mind!
