Is it true that chances are slim that you'll be called in for an interview unless you go to certain schools or have a lot of experience at well known companies? What's your experience been?

I worked in the recruiting and Human Resources field for 12 years and I can tell you that today, unlike a few years ago, lots of bigger companies are using internet portals as their sole way of identifying candidates for initial consideration. This being said, it certainly never hurts to apply online and see where it leads you. With some larger companies nowadays, even if you know someone and have a very strong referral, you still have to go through the web-portal to be routed to the correct department in order to have your resume go through the exact same avenue as everyone else. This is done for EOE practices as well as "CYA" for recruiters, hiring managers and everyone else involved in the hiring process.
That considered, not all companies operate in this manner and it depends on the particular practice of the company in which you are applying.

Good luck!

You would probably get a better job if you didn't do it by internet or email unless it specifically says that that is easier for them. Otherwise you should take the chance to meet them.
