The Human Genome project is to sequence all human genes. In addition, they started this project in 1990 and completed in June of 2000. Along with sequencing all DNA in humans, they also did that in fruit flies and E.coli.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) is a project to code 3 billion nucleotides contained in the human genome and to identify all the genes present in it.

Project goals were to

-identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA,
-determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA,
-store this information in databases,
-improve tools for data analysis,
-transfer related technologies to the private sector, and
-address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project.

To identify the sequence of bases in DNA which create a human being. Some will be the same across the species; others will vary, depending on the person's hair color, skin color, and other variables. With the base sequences identified, the proteins that they represent can be determined, and we can start getting a better idea of how life works -- and how to fix it when it doesn't.
