It is the oldest public park in the USA. It was used for military training. It was used for public hangings. The grazing of cattle was forbidden in 1830. During WWI victory gardens were planted in the park. It is 50 acres in size. It sit above the nations first subway tunnel. If I recall correctly, the land was donated by Mr. Blackstone.

The squirrels that live there are tame and will take food from you.

They have the frog pond. Many people/families go ice skating there in the winter. If I'm correct, its not a pond but a slab of concrete. They freeze it with water to provide the excitement in the winter. It is surrounded by some frog statutes.
Its very dangerous to be around in the evening. Many of the unfortunate homeless Bostonians sleep there. It is strongly advised not to be there from dusk til dawn.
For New Years Eve, they have ice scupltures and its a great place to watch the early fireworks.

Today it's a large park right in the center of the city.
Originally it was the common pastureland for the first settlers and one still may legally graze one's cows and sheep there.

I'm from Australia & I went there in August when decorated plaster cows where everywhere & were a competition to gain money for charity. What a unique idea.
