the banks do not have a choice. They cannot issue credit cards to people who do not have a ssn because of the patriot act. The goverment does this to protect you and other americans from either terrorism or just someone wanting to rip the bank off. This protects an american because if they have you info...they can look it up and see if something fishy is going on in your account. IF the bank opens an account without proper identification repeatedly...they can be taken over by the goverment. Non americans working in the us can get bank items issued if they have the proper documents.

sad but true. I've seen it happen. Immigration in the US is a joke. Illegals have more rights than legal immigrants and visa holders. I lived in the US for 8 years, my whole family speak English fluently, I hold a PhD degree. However because my work visa could not be renewed and I couldn't find any loophole in the law, fake wife, or wanted to stay in the country illegally, I ended up having to leave the country my kids learned to love. We all felt at home up there (contrary to some who live in ghettos and only speak their native language) and respected the US law while the global scumbags that will probably get an amnesty in a near future will benefit from their law breaking strategies. They will find defenders who say "they work hard and pay taxes" so let me tell you all this: I did the same PLUS under the law and because of that people like me is being punished. This sucks! I'm now well adjusted back in my country but I know my kids wish they were still there. Maybe, who knows, they will go back someday but I'll make sure they take no passports, produce fake ID's and SSN's and don't forget to go in a makeshiftboat ride or cross a desert so they can be more successful.....

No. The way our system is set up now the only way to track someone's financial history is by SSN. If banks make loans to people without verifiable financial histories or identities we will all pay in higher interest rates when all those folks default on their loans and walk away from huge balances.

It makes me mad when banks want all this identification for me to make a simple check cashing. Or even to get a prepaid card. I don't have a state ID because you must sign up for selective service, I don't want to give my SSN because of ID fraud. So if I want to cash a check I have to stop defending myself?
I say, why let terrorists rob us of our freedoms? Just because a foreign terrorist can't easily use a bank doesn't mean they have other ways to transfer money.

As I understand it, they are going to require a $100 deposit, charge 21.5% interest, a $500 credit limit and then after 6 months to a year of continued payment reimburse the $100. So they, aren't really giving them a deal and they sure going to make it attractive to druggies and terrorist to hide money. So it's just an other scheme for the bloodsuckers to make more money.

I've closed my accounts with Bank of America because they are engaged in illegal activities by accommodating illegal immigrants.
Why won't our government do something about it. Because they want to encourage it and tax the average citizen to pay for their benefits and bad debts.
All those candidates and none wants to address the issues that are pressing on the minds of the average American.
When will we ever be able to vote for the best person instead of the lessor of two evils. They all switch their minds and contradict themselves while campaigning. It's call bait and switch. Thought that was also illegal.

How then will they identify them? There has to be some standard way of knowing for certain which person is opening the account. Can we just tell them our names, and bring a note signed by our mother? I don't think so.

No! I wonder how long before the other banks follow suit. Will that cause rates for everyone else to go up?
