Clara Barton-- she began the AMERICAN RED CROSS during the Civil War. She attended our soldiers in that war. This will be a great start for history of nursing in America.

If you want something more modern you could look at the role of public health nurses and their impact on community health. The local public health department keeps stats of diseases in your area. If you want something attention grabbing, try your local stats on AIDS, TB, STDs, flu ect.
