What class is this for? Government? Economics? Health? Biology?

The subject of the class will make a BIG difference in what you're writing your opinion paper about.

Or is this one of these "open" topics for English class? (I always loved those!)

Opinion writing is usually best when it is done about something controversial, with people holding strong opinions on both (or every) side.

Your best bet when writing an opinion paper is to anticipate how your opponents will attempt to counter your arguments, then counter that accordingly. ("Cut 'em off at the pass," I call it!)

That being said, there are plenty of controversial topics other than abortion:

Evolution/Creationism debate - what should be taught in schools? (Google "Kansas Board of Education" and "Dover creation evolution" for recent devolopments on this)

Politics - Iraq war - should we stay or should we go? Will President Bush's recent decision to insert 21,000 more troops into Baghdad be effective?

Taxes - Does lowering taxes (as *both* JFK and Reagan argued, interestingly) boost the economy? Or was Bill Clinton correct in the 1990s when he raised taxes and the economy boomed?

Media and Celebrities - Do the media in our country spend too much time on news that is sensational, such as the recent passing away of Anna Nichole Smith? If this coverage is excessive, does it hurt us (the public) because we are not being informed about news from the rest of the world?

Global Warming - Most scientists believe it is happening, but there is still a big debate over how much (if any) of this is caused by humankind. (Google "Heidi Cullen" and Global Warming Debate to get more info on a recent controversy)

Religion - What are the implications of the growing tensions between Islamic societies and Western culture? Many Islamic countries view the West as decadent (see Anna Nichole Smith) while many in the West view Islamic fundamentalism as being too strict and intolerant, and believe womens' rights are oppressed in traditional Islam (Google "Sharia law" and "womens' rights" for more on this controversy)

Science/Health - Stem Cell Research - This controversy is just beginning, as states such as California and Missouri have passed laws granting state funding for research in this area. President Bush vetoed (his only veto so far) similar laws for federal funding, claiming stem cell research was immoral due to the fact the cells were harvested from in vitro fetuses. Scientists are worried the U.S. will fall drastically behind in the field of stem cell research due to lack of government funding, while Christian conservatives argue that no such research is necessary because of promising advances in "adult" stem cell research.

Whew. Those are just a few. If nothing here strikes you as being fun to research and write about, just pick up the newspaper and start reading. There is plenty of controversy out there!

Good luck with your paper!

Oh my gosh, there are so many. You could write an opinion piece on just about any current affair - the war in Iraq, universal health care, marriage for homosexuals, school vouchers. You could also simply write an opinion piece on why such and such band has been a driving force in society (for example Nirvana and the grunge movement).

Good luck!

If you don't already have an opinion then you shouldn't be writing one. It would just be fluff. Search inside yourself and the answer will come.
