That depends really. If you can find a rare Del Sol VTEC with the B15A3 it should beat any other Civic and Del Sol out there. Given its a stock/stock race.
If you race a (D16Z6 )SOHC Del Sol vs a (D16xx) SOHC Civic with sme driver skill then the Del SOl is most certainly going to win due to its weight.
However if you race the D16 Del Sol againts the 99-00 Civic Si the Si is going to leave it in high 2ns gear and contineu to pull in 3rd.
If you race it againts any 06+ VTEC Civic I would have to imagine that the 06 is going to win also dispite its increased wieght the additonal torque generated from the new R18 1.8L engine is going to give the advantage to the Civic. However this is still up for grabs considereing I dont know what the gear ratios are for the 06+ Civic.
Race the new 06 Si and your just going to get laughed at.

The del sol is heavier than the civic. It has to have extra support in the body for rigidity because it is a convertible. The civic hatch is ideal because it is light weight and serves as an excellent platform for drag racing. There are del sols that are made into drag cars but there are far more civic drag cars out their. The motors are the same d16 unless you get the Si civic(2000) which sports a b16 motor.

Wow a civic has more torque.... if your gonna answer a question do it right....everything I say is completely true and look it up and prove me wrong otherwise.
Ok the del sol is heavier than a civic, any model 92-00. Seems extremely odd since its tiny, but is true.
Now as for speed....the faster one would either be a 99-00 civic SI intergrated with a B16a2 engine. the del sol 'VTEC' is also integrated with a B16, but it is the B16A3.
That is top models... The Del sol SI, is a single cam vtec, as for the ex on the 99-00 civic. These engine are good for boost.
check out homemadeturbo.com
You can put one together for under 1500.
You cant really just ask which is better to race in, because stock... neither are. Your going to have go through much modification to stand up to these other hondas.
Now if you want my opinion for a honda race car. Buy a Honda CRX in good condition for like 2k, put a 2nd gen b16 in it, convert it to OBD1. To get this done professionally is will be around 4 grand complete.
But your car will smash any stock civic SI and even mustang gt's.
You have the ability to run 14.1-15.0 depending on how you drive STOCK. The Honda CRX is made for racing, its got double wishbone rear suspension (88-89 crx) like the Integra type R. they are 1,900 lbs. unlike the 2400 lb del sol.
Good luck!
BTW Hmotorsonline.com is the best JDM engine resource hands down.

The Civic Del Sol is lighter than the Civic, and with the same engine it hauls more @ss because of it. I would most definitely choose the Civic Del Sol. Then I would swap the engine for something like a JDM H22a or B18c. And THEN beef the sh*t out of it. Power-to-weight ratio would be through the roof!
