I worked my butt off to get my Eagle scout award, and shortly after I did my troop gave the same award to a deranged brat who set things on fired and bragged about it, like it was cool. I've never felt like I committed such a wasted effort in my life. THat award was supposed to mean something about civic duty and moral standards! I support their right to prevent homosexuals from being in their troops, so this has nothing to do with that.

I earned eagle scout last year, my self, along with two of my friends. We didn't have to worry about the less committed scouts because about 80% of our adult leadership was ex-military. They made sure that everyone who made it through the program worked their way through. I'm sorry to hear that you don't think he deserved the award, but I think that alot of groups like the BSA are having trouble with the kind of parents who just know that their kids should have gotten the same awards as everyone else, even if they didn't do half of the work (believe me, I saw plenty of this during my time in the scouts).

Hey there. My dad and my brothers are all Eagle scouts and that is definitely something to be proud of, but you are correct. There are, in every troop, a couple of ne'er do wells who somehow skate by and earn the same awards with little effort. My brothers always referred to them as "dollar scouts" because that's about what the patch cost, no effort other than the purchase of the patch was actually put into it.
My son was in scouting too and left his troop when he was a Star because they got a new scout master who thought BSA should be like the military.
There are, unfortunately two different extremes in scouting and very few of the in-betweens like you and my family.
Congrats on earning your Eagle!

Apparently the Boy Scouts macho, aggressive behavior in high regard.
How can you expect moral standards from a group that thinks a scout is about gender preferences?
Morality & civic duty is about treating everyone with love & kindness. Living by the Golden Rule.

I was never a real Boy Scout... but when my son was in 5th grade he wanted to be a cub scout... all dens were full so they asked me if I would train to lead one as they had some others who wanted to join and they needed a leader... long story short. I soon found out that there was very little to no moral instruction or real disciplin in that pack... I had 9 boys and for each to earn their pins I required them to do as much of the work on their own as they could. I did not alow projects that had be clearly done by the parents to pass.. I did not care what the derby car looked like as long as the boy did the work... if the stepstool they made looked like a train wreck but was done by the boy with effort to the best he could do then he got credit... if all it was was put to geather from pre cut suff by the father and all the kid did was screw it togeather I did not pass it... all of my boys had a good time and wanted to do things on there own... but the parents kept steping in and wanting every thing done for them like the other dens did... I taught respect for the flag and proper color guard procedures... disiplin in pack meetings... I got so much flack and parents pulled their boys out... and the boys came to me crying to be allowed back in... after two years I gave up... I had 5 boys left and none of them wanted to go on to Boy Scouts because of the treatment the boy scouts gave them when they went to the joint Scout meetings... The Boy Scouts also had little real disciplin...That orginization did not even come close to the propaganda literature they hand out in recruting... I do not support any so-called scouting orginization because of that experience

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience and if you really feel it was wrong, contact your local council about it. I am active in boy scouts as a leader and I can't think of a better organization for boys and young men. You worked hard for your Eagle - be proud of your effort. Also- be proud that you really earned yours and it wasn't just handed to you to appease you and keep you from whining. One day you will understand that the other young man won't appreciate his as he knows he didn't work for it.
