I don't know what kind of metal it is. It could be brass or painted sheet metal. Or plated sheet metal.

There is a product called Bar Keeper's Friend. It is fantastic at cleaning all kinds of metal. It can be purchased at Wal Mart stores. Hope this helps.

Steel wool - available at your local hardware. Sometimes Magic Eraser will work as well. We put a little Murphy's oil soap on the magic eraser and it works even better (even though the eraser expires faster).
