There are actually two different movies in production based on Janis' life, but only one has permission to use her actual music. I honestly can not recall who is attached to the movie, but the one that has the blessing of her family (and the use of her music) is going forward. The other film, however, which can not legally use her music is being headlined by Renee Zelweger. As of now, though, production has been halted.

There was a thinly veiled story that changed the name starring Bette Modeler many years back called "The Rose." The character was much like Janis, but to make it more dramatic in that movie the singer died on stage during a concert.

I haven't heard that but it would be pretty cool if they did. Of course the ending wouldn't be attractive but it would be a good flick. There would probably be to many fights about the music rights now to make a movie.
