it will definately help you if you hardrive is almost full. if you have a million mp3 and movies its better to have them on an external. i filled my 200gb sata hardrive completely full...literally and i noticed a major drop in hardrive performance.

if you want even better performance i would recommend buying another internal hardrive. internal hardrives are generally cheaper and are faster than external drives. i suggest transfering some of your files to a secondary internal hardrive and then defrag both drives to get even better hd performance.

No. Almost all external hard drive interfaces (except SCSI and eSATA) are slower then internal interfaces. So accessing any files on the external HD will be slower then it is now. If you add another internal HD that might help, esp. if your current HD is very full (more then 75-80%) or old and slow. Make sure you get a 7200 RPM HD. I trust Seagate as a brand since most of their HDs come with a nice long warranty (except the cheep ones they sell at best buy and wal-mart).

If you want to speed up your computer. Defrag, add more ram, or upgrade your processor. If you computer is older then two years you are probably better off just buying a new one.

The most important thing you can do to make your computer run faster is to install more memory (RAM). You don't say how much you have, but with virus checkers and automatic updates, 1 GB is the minimum. 2GB is better. You should also check msconfig (search for tips on how to use it) to make sure you don't have a bunch of worthless stuff clogging up your RAM at start up. Moving infrequently used files to external storage will only help if you have less than 5-10% free space on your computer.

Unless your computer is only slow because of the hard drive being full then no.

Your best bet if you are running XP is to press ctrl+alt+del and bring up the task manager - switch to the processes tab and search for each item in the list to see what you can remove, and how.

Clean extra stuff off your hard drive, and the do defrag.

If the computer is still slow, you might want to add ram.

No. The only way your hard drive can slow things down is if it really needs a defragmentation and is a really crappy one.
Your ram, cpu and video card are mainly where you get your speed. Pulling stuff on and off the hard drive is a very very tiny part of the equation with any decent drive.

Actually it really won't speed up your computer that much. It will free up some space for your computer to use your hard drive as memory. But to really have your computer be faster you should either buy more memory or upgrade the processor

Only if your C drive is filled at greater than 60% capacity.

Keeping it at 50 - 60 % full will allow defragmentation to operate more efficiently hence improving performance.

... but don't expect a dramatic difference.

No, more space in HD does not mean faster computer

It helps in defragging yr computer, speed up a little bit but not much

the best and cheapest is to add RAM

If your current HDD is 3/4 full and you move a lot of larger files or even unused programs off of it,your machine will have a lot less "stuff" to search through!
