As far as the books are concerned "The Wizard of Oz" was written by Frank Baum and published in 1900. The story itself roughly takes place in that time period. The movie which premiered in 1939 kept true to the time period although there were definitely changes from the book to the screen to make it saleable to a larger audience.
Now "Wicked" is very unique--Maguire takes us to the time before the "Wizard" to meet the Wicked Witch of the West and see her growing up with her sister and Glinda. He certainly uses his imagination in showing a different side to Elphaba (the W. W.) who is not so wicked and is rebelling against a politically corrupt Wizard to restore peace and harmony to the land of Oz. Dorothy, and her three compadres appear very little in this story but the ending is the same with Elphaba 'melting'. I can't wait to see the musical. Oh, and Maguire has written a sequel to "Wicked" called "Son of a Witch" which should be a good read.

the book, the wizard of oz was written in 1900. i have never read it, but i assume that it was around that time.
the movie(1939) , the wizard of oz, appears to take place in the 1930's, depression era, (the black and white part of the movie), judging by peoples clothes, the farm scenes, etc.
i am not familiar with wicked.

wicked was written very recently, and wizard of oz in early 1900's, but the places portrayed in these works seem to lack time. they have both futuristic and antique qualities, so its almost impossible to determine when exaxtly.

I suspect that TWoO takes place in the first decades of the twentieth century (given the scenes in Kansas). Wicked is trickier - it's so mythical I think it's probably "outside" of time.
