It is perfectly normal, my son's still sticks out and he is nearly 1 years old. Some people have innies and some have outies, it's what makes us so different from each other!

heya ,
I think it is an Umbilical Hernia and
it is normal and if it doesn't go after a while then an operation might have to be done. I had the same thing when i was a baby and i had to have an operation...nothing too major..basically a hernia is the portrusion of tissue through muscular tissue and an operation is used to just tuck the tissue back in .
have a look at the following link for more information, and the section i think is more applicable to your child is the 'Umbilical Hernia section
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hernia#Umbilical_hernia
anyway dont worry about it ..the best thing to do is to go and see your doctor / midwife and tell them about your concerns ..everything should be ok .
and by the way congrats on your new born (well 6 weeks new!) =)

Yes it sounds like a hernia, my little girl had one, they dont tend to do anything until after the age of 1 or 2 as sometimes they just go away in children but if it doesnt they may do a little operation, my daughter had this operation and was in and out of hospital the same day with no problems at all

That's the age that my son's started too. It's probably a hernia. If it is painful when you touch around it or it won't push in at all it might need to have surgery, but if it doesn't bother him and you can push it in (and it pops back out) then it's ok. The doctor said that it's just a weak spot in the muscle wall where something pops through but it's harmless and as his muscles get stronger it will go away.

Many people have already said this, and I will too. It sounds like your baby has a herniated belly button. My baby had one too and his went away on it's own in 3-4 months. And, don't worry, your baby is not in pain over it, like other hernias. Call your pediatrician just to inform them & they'll let you know that it's nothing to worry about. Our pediatrician said that they usually go away by 1 yr. of age & sometimes surgery is necessary, but not usually.
Congrats on your baby!

Sounds like a little hernia, I'm not sure what they can do for it, but a phone call to your Health Visitor will put your mind at rest.

Sounds very much like a hernia, which can heal itself over time but should be drawn to your doctors attention on your next visit. Don't worry, it's very common.
