Growing plants from seed indoors an they are going crazy!?

I am attempting my first garden and I got some seeds and a indoor grower from Walmart. Nothing fancy. All the seed packets said to sart 6 weeks before last frost and because I live in Eastern NC with a somewhat early last frost date I started them a week ago. They are growing out of control and I'm afraid they are going to die. Some are over 4 inches tall already (sunflowers). The others are not so out of control but growing at a steady pace. The roots of some of them are already sticking out of the bottom of the peat bags. I guess my question is how do I keep them alive and healthy for 5 more weeks and can I transfer some of the larger plants into small pots?

They were mexican sunflowers and they had instructions to preplant

yes you can transplant them. You need to thin out the seed trays and seperate the smaller plants so they have room to grow and are able to obtain the nutrients from the soil they need to survive. I do the same thing with my garden every year. You may lose a few but you will lose them all if you dont transplant them.

You should have read the directions a little more thoroughly. Sunflowers don't need to be planted ahead of time. They do very well planted outside in April or May. You will probably lose them. I don't know what else you have planted, but I live in NW Ohio, and I NEVER start anything ahead. I have been gardening for 40 years and have always been happy with the timing and yield of EVERYTHING I put in the garden.

Yes--put the sunflowers in 4" pots ,with added soil,until it is safe to plant them outdoors.

If thay are tall and thick, that is good. If tall and skinny and falling over, not good. Yes, you can transfer any of them to larger pots.
