First of all please DO NOT listen to some of these "answers"...you should NEVER use a tampon if you are not on your period, and tampons DON'T cause cancer but are linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome. Other answers are good--relax (if possible) and use the lightest absorbancy you can. You may also not have it far enough in, you will get the hang of it.

It is not a stupid question, we all had to learn.
The tampon has to go in at the same angle as your vaginal canal. Don't feel stupid, but it is something that is hard to explain w/ just words. There are directions that come with the tampons. Read those and try the different positions that they suggest. Sometimes new users do well by putting one foot up on the toilet seat and inserting the tampon that way. Once the tampon is inserted all the way, it should not hurt at all; you should not be able to feel it. If you are using the tampons w/o the applicator, try using a brand that has an applicator. If you are having trouble getting the applicator in, then put a tiny drop of vaseline on the end of the applicator.
If you are uncomfortable during your period, which many of us are, try inserting the tampons and pacticising when you are not on your period.
If none of this works, try using pads for a while and give tampons another try in several months.
Good luck, you will get it.

Inside the package there should be a little pamphlet that has picture guided instructions. If you are already following the instructions, perhaps you should try a different brand of tampon or a lesser absorbancy. If you're a teen, you may want to start by trying Junior sized tampons. They're sold at drug stores/supermarkets and they are more slim than regular tampons. Also, you'll want to choose a light absorbancy to start out with. Make sure that the tampon is in far enough or this can cause discomfort. Be sure to use UNSCENTED tampons! The scent can cause irritation AND it can cause yeast infections. Remember to relax when you're inserting the tampon or you could irritate the vaginal walls. Keep in mind that tampons are not for everybody. Perhaps you will never grow to like them.

The size may not be right. Try the slender regular ones with the plastic applicator (Kotex) and not the cardboard ones. They are not supposed to go straight up, but more towards the back at a slight angle. Don't force it it should go in at the right angle. You can use a little lubricant if necessary. If it hurts, you have it at a bad angle. Keep trying until you figure out the proper angle. Don't stand and do it, it's easier if you sit or squat over the toilet.

In response to one of the answers you received, tampon usage will not cause you to develop cancer. The most serious thing you can get is Toxic Shock Syndrome. The best way to avoid this illness is by alternating your tampon usage with wearing pads. I do agree with the rest of the comments, such as relaxing your muscles, trying out a smaller size, and last but not least, use the picture in the insert to aid you. It does WORK!!!

Use the junior size to start. It just takes practice. Even adult women get the tampons inserted incorrectly and it is very painful. I found Playtex are the best because they have rounded, plastic tubes to insert. Remember to insert the tampon aiming up and toward your lower back (if you are standing, or in and down toward the bed if you are lying down. Vaginas are at an angle, they are not perpendicular to the ground when you are standing.

Hi there. Just wanted to say one thing. Please do not use vaseline anywhere near your vagina and certainly not on anything that is going to be inserted like a tampon. Vaseline is not water soluble and can cause an infection. If you need some lubrication (and that is a good idea) try using some KY jelly, it is formulated for vaginal use.
BTW, pads are much healthier for you and if they are re-usable (the kind that you wash and use again) they are very good for the environment also!
Good luck dear.

you are lucky and own a small vaginal opening so buy slenders or even smaller ask the pharmacist about this and if its a man then call your doctor they may have a better plan like useing a pad in maxi for heavy days and light for them ,, another idea is to raise some vaginal secretions before placeing the slender in ,use your fingers to slowly massage the opening and the clitorus ,im not sayin masturbate if thats a problem ,just til its damp or moister than usual, then place the applicator inside slowly, now it will be less of a dry and rough thing inside you ,or just use a dab of K-Y to coat the tube, then slide it in,, sorry if thats too graphic but its to try to help

Not a stupid question at all...I was totally shy about it too and the first I did it I was surprised and relieved that it wasn't that bad. One question? Are you a virgin? this maybe where the pain is coming in. If not then the key is to definitely use the smallest size to start out with and when you insert it should not go straight up, it should slant toward the butt area. Hope this helps

I remember talking with her mom about this. 1968 or 9 No 7??
I insisted my wife at 15 use them because the thought of the pad hanging in the bottom of her panties ,, made me ill.
You know it is so important - - - I forgot the Q???
OH!
A million women are using them RIGHT now
so You need to see your gyno!!
"" I "" could look for you... ;~ ) but if I found something I didn't like..
we would still go see the gyno (possumus you know - - dudes poking at your thing), "gynopossomuses".
Make sure you get a real lady that knows what your talking about.
It is not suposed to hurt ..you are going to need their product for the next 60 years ... wait it is 70 now right?.... think ... would they let you suffer ??? : )
