Pete Carroll would be the dream coach but he isn't leaving USC.
Jim Mora Jr. is the best coach out there that is not retiring. I think he still has the stuff it takes.

I agree with yours over the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Chargers dont need a coach who is still getting the feel of the NFL game (Pete Caroll). Parcells and Cottrell are not coming out of retirement. And Norv Turner hasnt been a head coach in the NFL for 10 years I think. I'd say Bill Cowher should be hired, because he ran one of the toughest defenses in Pittsburgh, and he can make the San Diego defense as tough as the one he had at Pittsburgh. As for their offense, all he's gotta do is get Rivers to throw a little bit, get a huge season from LT, and the Chargers are Super Bowl champs. The Chargers have the talent to win a Super Bowl, they just need a coach to get them there, and that coach is Bill Cowher.

Pete Carroll all the way. If he was slightly interested in coaching the Miami Dolphins earlier, he has to be waiting by the phone for the call from the Chargers.
Come on, Spanos & AJ, get it done.
Cowher wouldn't be bad, but I think Pitt still has rights over him, so there's some compensation to be given up there.
Cotrrell & Jim Jr would be good fits here, if no Pete.
I don't know about the Tuna. He didn't do all that well w/ the Cowgirls. I think his time is over as an HC & he should retire.
NO Norv Turner! He's only a good coordinator, not a good HC.
AJ getting fired would be asenine. He helped build this franchise (along w/ the late John Butler) to the great team it is today. He has had some great drafts (i.e. Kaeding, Merriman, Castillo, Olshansky, Rivers for Eli, Phillips, Turner, Olivea, fleecing the NY Giants, Cromartie, McNeill). He may be bull headed, but has a great track record.

Three out of the four in the Tribune will not be coaching San Diego. Parcells, Turner, Carroll. I guess that would leave Ted Cottrell as the logical choice being that they lost their defensive coordinator to Dallas. It sure is interesting to see what is going to happen since Schottenheimer is an offensive coach. I read that L.T. wasn't happy with Marty and I suspect that along with losing all of your coordinators that meant that Marty wasn't as valuable to the team as he once was. San Diego really has some issues now and they could possibly destroy the team if they don't bring in the right guy, which in my opinion is going to be difficult since there aren't many quality, proven coaches left.

I have said before it will take a lot of money and a winning team to get Carroll out of USC.
I don't think Parcells has the class, but he definately has the pedigree.
Turner could be a good match.
Don't know enough about Cottrell.
I doubt Cowher would come out here since he said he wanted to spend more time in NC with family.
Jim Mora is too wishy washy.
How about Norm Chow or Mariucci?
Any way you look at it, it needs to happen fast and decisively. We have the team and quality back up coaches....Just need someone to lead us.
I still say Chargers take 2007!

Were you really shocked? If you think about it, this really wasn't much of a surprise with all the coordinators moving on to bigger and better things, it was only a matter of time. Firing AJ Smith would've been much, MUCH worse for the team, you can't fire arguably the best GM in the game, the guy's like the Nostradamus of football talent.
As for who would make the best replacement, Cowher. He probably won't come out of retirement until next year though, and I have a feeling the Chargers already know who they're bringing in next, we'll just have to wait and see. I can tell you this though, whoever gets the job is one lucky s.o.b., coaching the best team in football in america's finest city, if that's not enough to lure a coach out of "retirement" nothing is.

Schottenheimer were given screwed. Turner put in the offense and the Chargers style of blamed Schotty for dropping the coordinators; like that become his fault. Norv won't be able to be a head coach in the NFL. He won't be able to do it. he's an excellent offensive coordinator yet won't be able to be a helpful head coach.

Being a Raiders fan I hope they hire Norv"I AM A HORRIBLE HEAD COACH"Turner. We might get lucky and beat them once in a while.

Bill Parcells or Bill Cowher, though I think both are not likely to want to come out of their new retirement.
