They record the moves that have been made. This way they can review them later and learn from their mistakes and improve their game. It's a good idea. If you play in yahoo, you have a button on the right that says "email history to me". If a game is interesting, you can analyze it later.

They are writing down all the moves. I don't play in tournaments because I'm just an average player. But I have started writing all my games down and I highly recommend it. After the game is over you can go back and review what you did right and what you did wrong, then learn from that information. I played a game the other day and happened upon a beautiful defensive position against a bishop forking my pieces. (Forking = when one piece moves into a position where it is attacking two or more pieces.) Since I have it written down, I can now go back and find ways to actually create that scenario in future games. The result was that neither of my threatened pieces were captured by the forking bishop and I ended up taking the bishop for free!!! I pinned it against the king. (Pin = attacking a piece so that it cannot move away without putting its king in check by the attacking piece.)
I have found that by writing my games down I am understanding board positions better. It also serves as a back-up during the game if the board or pieces get bumped...you'll not have to argue about what goes where.
Try it!
I hope this helps. Good luck and .... "castle early!"

They write down the moves so they can replay and study the game later. Normally, you use algebric notation. Starting from white's side of the board, the board is divided into eight column, from a to h, and 8 ranks, from 1 to 8.
Refer to the link below for full explanation of how that works.
