Is it normal for the doctor to perform a rectal exam during a pap smear? I've had several and they've never done it until today. I think it's a little weird considering they've never done it before and they did it without warning me first.

Not all Drs do it.

It is routinely done for women as part of a regular gynecological examination to check the uterus and ovaries

Usually when you go in for a pelvic exam, the doctor will feel your uterus and ovaries by inserting a finger rectally. I have had this done every time I have ever had a pelvic exam done (with several different doctors).

sounds very strange. did you not ask why at the time. ovaries etc are better checked by inserting fingers into the vagina and feeling the tummy at the same time. i do lots of pap smears and i have to say i nor my colleagues have ever done rectal examinations.

Yes it is normal..... and no, they don't feel your ovaries and uterus by inserting a finger in your anus, they do it so they can feel the common wall the anus and vagina share, if there is some problem with the vagina, it can sometimes be felt in the anus.
