finley036 pretty much has it right.

However, think about something... how are Gypsies (probably Rromani) and Travellers treated?

What about the terms "pikey" and "gypo" and all the horrid things said about them? How many people boast about beating up a "pikey" or a "gypo"? How many talk about how bad they are as a people, how they cannot be trusted? "Pikeys" and "gypos" are now being lumped together with "chav" and we ALL know what a "chav" is.

I am an American Rromani ("Gypsy"). I hear all the blasted time from Travelles and Rromani from the British Isles (my friends) about the "pikey" and "gypo" thing.

Can you blame them for pretty much staying to themselves?

I have a question: what about the racism against them?

Ok, culturally it is "Rom Romensa, Gadje Gadjensa" (Rrom with Rrom, Gadje with Gadje) but could not Gadje (non-Gypsy) hatred and centuries of persecution contribute to this just a wee bit?

Usually gypsies and travelers just stick to their own. That's just customary. I don't think they are generally racist but they just prefer fellow gypsies and travelers that they are familiar with.

I always thought they were families so there wouldn't be Asians or blacks to be in it.

They probably are racist. I doubt they'd want a girl marrying a black dude. Probably not the wrong white dude either. I think they are very clannish.
