I think it's part of what got us through the bad times in our evolution, when competition was so fierce that there never was enough. We never had to handle the concept of 'excess'.
Now we are at the top of the food chain and can relax but we're still behaving like amoeba and gannets. I think it takes a lot of work to fight our instincts and win - personally, I would accept a draw.

Some good answers already, but here is my take. Yes, we are that way as a species. Please understand the self preservation instinct. I want to live and do what I want to do. To think of others is a thought process that we control to a degree. If you love someone, you will save them from a painful situation. If you do not know someone, there is no tie other than your good heart. Would you save the life of a stranger, say a bus is coming and by pushing them out of the way... you will die. Think, you have one second to make the decision. If you say yes, that is a thoughtful and unselfish person. Hope that helps.

I know what you mean and I agree. I hate when people complaint about stupid little thing, and they don't realize how lucky they are.
People say we don't have money or food, but they don't know what real hunger is, real hungry people can't even stand or talk to complain, and thousands of children die every year around the World; people complain about police but in other countries the police are no better than unschooled guerrilla soldiers with license to kill, people here dare to insult honest cops for doing their job, let them try to insult a Russian or Mexican police officer to see how fast they hit the ground.
Sometimes I think people need a reality check; one month in some Communist country, or some African lawless village ruled by a "war lord", and those "flag burners" would never complain about life in America. Even jail inmates complain about jail; send them one week to some South American or African jail and they'll know the real meaning of the phrase "living hell".
Instead of complaining about every little thing, people should put their energy to bring intelligent solutions to the real problems.

I'm not like that. When I catch myself starting to feel bad for myself, I remind myself that it could be worse. I start to say "what if........I had NO job. or what if.....I had a life threatening disease." I'm very grateful, and trust me, I don't have a lot. I waitress only on weekends, I live w/ my bf and his parents, I never graduated, I don't do anything. But I am still Thankful and Hopeful.

I am not sure it is by nature (ie DNA encoded), I think its because we are taught to want so much with only perfection as the goal. Well that ant life. Life is about being in the here and now and to give and take.

Human nature, we spend probably 98% of the time thinking about ourselves, of course having a cold is equivalent leprosy b/c I'm the one with the cold.....
Realizing this is a good step...never take anything for granted....

cause the grass is always greener on the other side and if we didn't have a desire to move forward to better things we'd stagnate
