Your best formula is to become an Air Force or Navy pilot with an engineering degree -- not mandatory but it might help to go to the Air Force Academy or Naval Academy -- and quickly as possible while you're a young officer get into a program to be sent to get a science PhD or an MD (there are opportunities to have the military pay you to do that). That way you might could make it in as either scientist, doctor, or pilot, and you'll have the military and aviation background.

Fly to Cape Canaveral and hijack the Space Shuttle probably.

Most non-US astronauts have to take American citizenship before going into space, so even though the press describes them as the "first British astronaut", not a one of them actually lives in this country. Helen Sharman is I think the exception, but she went up with the Russians. I would suggest swearing allegiance to the red, white and blue, sign up to the air force and then as soon as possible request a transfer to NASA. Assuming that is, that you are not shortly about to graduate from Cambridge, Oxford, Havard or MIT with a first-class honours degree in science and might get fast-tracked onto the shuttle as a mission specialist.

I still think my first plan is the best!

Ignore all thos bad answers.

At present it is still the case that NASA takes military pilots. That may change in the future. They are beginning to take one or two scientists, but obviously with a million scientists in the US, your chances are slim even if you became the best around.

You are probably still best joining the military and learning to fly.

Seriously, why not write to NASA. I am sure they will take you seriously. Just ask them what education and post-education courses you should take.

Don't let idiots and jokesters get in your way if you are really serious.
