Speak for yourself. I value my privacy. If you want to be famous, and live on a farm, go to the pig pen and do an oration. It'll give you about the same thing.

I don't think it's a cultural thing...I think it's more personal. Some just make a lot of money at it in the process.
Think about it. I am sure we all know someone who just HAS to be the center of attention. Even when we are kids, there's always that one kid that has to steal the other kid's thunder. Some people just crave the attention. That can't be narrowed down to just a cultural thing. That's an all over the world thing.

There is a verse in a poem by Theodore Tilton, titled "Even this shall pass away", that deals with fame. It goes like this:
Towering in the public square
Twenty cubits in the air,
Rose his statue carved in stone.
Then the king, disguised, unknown,
Gazing at his sculptured name,
Asked himself, "And what is fame?
Fame is but a slow decay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"
It answers your question by saying fame is fleeting and that, in time, only the very, very, very few achieve lasting immortality.

We believe if we are famous we have a chance to live an eternal life on this earth. For example, we all know who Babe Ruth is, although he passed away 60 years ago, his name and his baseball feats still live on. Babe Ruth is famous in 2007 and most likely will be famous in 100 years from now, if this earth is still in good shape. Ruth transcended time the non-famous live in.

It bothers many of us that we die. Fame is our only shot at earthly immortality.
