My teacher once told me that it is:
"putting yourself in someone else's shoes."

EMPATHY is the word used for not making judgments until you've walked in another man's shoes.I recently read a report about some teenagers who beat a homeless man{a veteran no less}nearly to death. The psychologists the reporter talked to said teenagers today display a PROFOUND LACK of EMPATHY due to being given everything money can buy. These same teenagers display no EMPATHY even for the parents who provide all these things. In the experts opinions these children display some very disturbing trends which include homicidal tendencies and are a danger to others.Including parents. The psychologists went on to say something better be done soon or these children once they are in adulthood will pose a greater risk than any terrorist.

its simular to understanding! when you understand something you get it!
empathy is having those feelings
you know when emotional people say you don't understand where i'm coming from you just don't understand!
chances are the other person understand but they don't feel the same way!
ever watch charmed?
well there is an empath on there and the best way to give you a meaning is
you feel what i feel that is empathy
when i pinch my self and feel pain my twin has that same pain
empath
would it be correct to say i have empathy for others who have a hard time understanding words!
:)
my boyfriend just explained this to me when i was emotional and wined about him not understanding me and where i was coming from!
he swore he understood then said i don't have empathy for you but i understand the issue!

the ability to understand what another person is feeling 'to know and understand what it is like to be in their shoes'. Not to be confused with sympathy which can be patronising and give the impression of being someone who is superior to the person at the recieving end.
example: someone is stuck in a ditch. a person walks by and says oh dear you poor thing, being stuck in a ditch. a second person walks by, sees the person and offers them their hand to help them out. That is empathy.

Empathy is the ability to understand and identify with another person's feelings. For example, if you have lost a parent in the past, and a frien recently loses one of theirs...you would be able to empathize with them, becuase you have been there and know what it feels like. However, if they have lost a parent, and you never had, then you would only be able to sympathize with them, because you would not have the ability to understand and identify with the other persons feelings.

We have two main roles in life, one as an individual, the other as a member of humanity.
For me, Empathy is when you play up the second role. It's only possible if you play down the first role.

the ability to imagine oneself in another's place and understand the other's feelings, desires, ideas, and actions. It is a term coined in the early 20th century, equivalent to the German Einfühlung and modeled on “sympathy.” The term is used with special (but not exclusive) reference to aesthetic experience. The most obvious example, perhaps, is that of the actor or singer

To "sympathise" with someone is to feel bad FOR them.
To "empathise" with someone is to feel bad WITH them.
The difference is that you feel the pain as though it were your own.

is it not similar to sympathy? "i empathise with you" - perhaps understanding somebodies situation opposed to sympathy, sharing somebodies situation?
