If your general office skills are good, contact a temporary placement firm (Kelly Services, Office Team, etc). The can/will do placement for everything from receptionist to executive assistant to accountant. Many firms with temporary assignments are hoping to find a permanent employee. Good luck!

If you're just looking for a job, this idea might not be for you. But, if you're looking for something with a solid income potential, this could be for you. I know of a lot of "stay-at-home" moms doing this.
It's an Internet marketing business opportunity, a business that has a system that allows you to build it, develop it, then when it's up and running it allows you to exit and with the extra time you'll have, you'll be able to build, develop and run another. . .it's never ending, IF you're up to it. It's not difficult, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do. It’s as simple as this: Shop on-line (do your regular shopping – toothpaste, toilet paper, deodorant, etc) and get paid for it, then get others to do the same thing and get paid for that, too. It can be developed as a referral business or you can directly market the products. There is a huge variety of products to market, which gives you the advantage of choosing just a few products or even just one product that you're interested in and really get behind it. The affiliated corporation takes care of inventory, shipping, billing/payment procedures, bookkeeping, business reports, etc. Ultimately, you're getting paid for redirecting your shopping and referring others to do the same. It's fun, it's easy, and it is incredibly profitable. There's a saying: We’re making friends, making money, and making a difference. If you'd like more information, contact me at hoozdaboss@aol.com

With your kids being grown, the only solution I could give would be to move and work in an area where you can make good money as a medical assistant. However, you can live below your means for a while and become and RN and make really good money.
I know you said you can't afford to go back to school, but who can? I heard a really good quote once and I never forgot it:
"Education is a way out." I posted that in my dorm while I was in school and I have it framed in my office now for all of my employees to see.
Control your destiny!!!!

You can become an instructional assistant in a school...
Special ed, the field i'm in, is always looking for assistants. If you love kids this is the job for you. Its a 7 hour a day job and you get all the great benefits that teachers get (holidays off, great medical benefits).

I know how it is not being able to afford to go to school, but unfortunately a sheepskin is essential this day and time to make a decent living. Have you given any thought to maybe taking some on line courses in the medical or other fields. check around your area and see what type of jobs are in a growing field, so that when you finish the jobs are still available. Good luck.

Check your local One Stop center. These centers are partly run by the state department of labor. They offer job placement, training, career interest inventories, job prep services & vocational counseling. These are great resources (look up online depending on where you live). All it will cost you honey, is some time. Definitely worth checking out. I wish you all the best. I know how you feel - I have kids too & sometimes feel like my life has been put on hold.

Start your own in home day care.
That way you wouldn't have to pay to put your kids anywhere and you would be bringing in kids to entertain them. You already have all the tools you need. You can even get a name for yourself like the little critters......
