What is the Halo plot about and why is it so loved and popular? What is it about it we identify with and why are we so compelled by the Halo universe?

for starters it's a shooter so that gives it some pick up and play ability. that can go a long way, sure it would take a while to learn the little things about the game but after you learn how to move around and shot you can generally start playing with your friends. plus, the fact that you can only carry 2 weapons gives a more realistic feel than most shooter where you can carry 10 weapons.

as for the story, it is easy to identify with the main character because he is the a savior to humans in the first game. In fact the whole human race is rather identifiable because the enemy is some alien race that wants to exterminate the human race. so it is easy to identify with the master chief because you are fighting for your survival which every human being can identify with.

About: a collection of alien religious zealots who see all forms of life outside their own 'covenant' to be filth fit only for eradication. Mankind finds an ancient artifact - an artifical ring 'planet' and a just as ancient slumbering alien race that resembles and breeds as something more akin to an fungicidal infection or disease. You play a genetically/surgically enhanced soldier, who's just tough enough but vunerable enough to make for a thrilling fight.

Why: Well I think that Halo takes so many of the 'great moments in sci-fi' and mixes them all up in an interactive experience. The designers are fans of the genre and wanted it to be the sort of game they wanted to play and the story they wanted to tell - probably the main reason why 2 was so poor being that the original H1 team was devoid of the company founder.

H1 is a great game filled with stunning cinematic moments, it also helped that a lot of it felt 'real' or at least more physically solid than the previous First Person Shooter Genres. Tactics won you more fights than just spraying ammo around a room of bitmapped villains and you don't have an image of your character carrying around half a tonne of preposterously designed weapons. The fact you could be running around a beatifully rendered landscape then get in a vehicle and drive/fly was(for me) a staggering moment in video games.

H2 is a great online experience (or can be depending on who you're playing with), the story decended into ridiculousness though and the gameplay was a poor shadow of its former self.

Wouldn't say I identify with it myself but certainly the main character and many of the situations are so akin to many of the books films and comics I've been so entertained by and loved over the years makes me relive those moments every time I switch on my Xbox and play 'Assault on the Control Room'.
