Nothing about a horse is cheap. Keep in mind that the horse itself is a very minor fraction of the cost. There's saddles and other tack, feed costs, veterinary bills, etc.
The upkeep costs on a $100,000 horse is several thousand a year. The upkeep costs on a $200 nag is still several thousand a year.

You mention only getting one horse. You might want to get 2, since horses are herd animals and need to be around each other to be happy and mentally healthy. Try searching on www.horsetopia.com, www.equine.com or www.agdirect.com. you can search by price, zip code, state, breed, etc...I like horse shopping online....you get a little preview before you actually waste your time driving around to barns, only to find that the advertised horse was not what you had in mind. Keep in mind, as others have said, that the purchase price of the horse is probably the cheapest part about horse ownership. Equine vets are expensive and you need to see the farrier every 6-8 weeks. Not to mention the price of a saddle and all other tack and equipment! Hope this helps and good luck with your search!

Check the want ads in the Chicago Tribune. Call the boarding stables in your area and contact the 4-H Clubs. Very often, horses are given away to good homes.
Be aware, however, that keeping a horse is not inexpensive. Feed, shoeing and vet bills will run over $2,000/yr for any horse, regardless of what you pay for the animal. Saddles, bridles and grooming equipment are expensive, too.

Where in Illinois are you? Look in the local paper. Do you know what breed of horse that you would like? Have you ever owned a horse before. If you are not familiar with this in your area, find soemone that you can trust that is. Would hate to see you get stuck with someone else's problem kid.
