I have 6 guinea pigs, they are the best pets I have ever owned. Last year I lost 9 of my pigs to a furnace fire, filled the house up with carbon monoxide and put me in the hospital and killed my piggies. Anyway. I have had my oldest for four years and she is a lot more calm now that she is older though. They can be trained if you have the patience and if you get the right breed then it will make a good cuddle buddy too. But I recommend you get two females because they are social animals. Oh and females don't stink hardly at all compared to males. You can e-mail me if this is what you are thinking about....I am a guinea pig genius! ha ha Hope you have fun picking a new pet!

I would stick with another of the rodent family, because you already know how to care for them generally (something like a dog would be WAY more work). You could try something that's virtually the same, such as a gerbil or mouse. Or if you wanted to go bigger a guinea pig is fun. First I'd recommend checking out websites like PetSmart.com or Petco.com because they will have care sheets for all the animals. They can help you choose which ones are a good fit for your lifestyle as well as budget.

If you wanted to get into more exotic pets, you could look into chinchillas (I have two, they're great), ferrets, or even something like a hedgehog or sugar glider. Some general tips to keep in mind though, are that these kind of pets generally require a lot more personal attention than a hamster, and because they are more exotic they will be more expensive. In addition, they're generally not well suited for a house that has small children because they are either fragile or nocturnal. It can be hard to find a veterinarian that will treat exotics as well. And one last thing to keep in mind is where you might acquire the pet (shelter vs breeder) and whether or not it is legal to keep it in your state (some states do not allow gliders or hedgehogs. This can generally be found out from a breeder.)

And one last thing, I'm assuming that you are an adult in this answer. If you are a child or still living with parents, I would recommend sticking to more convention small pets simply because they require less care.

The most important thing is to do your homework. Don't pick something just because it's cute. Pick it because it'll be good for you, and you'll be good for it.

Good luck.

After my hamster died, I felt it best to try a more challenging pet. I researched Chinchillas. I found that chinchillas have an average life span of 15 years. Besides being cute, and somewhat cuddly, they are extremely intelligent and very unique. There are several chinchilla rescues that I know of. Though they are pricey and require a lot of handling and a large cage, they are are, in my opinion, much funner and more rewarding then a hamster could ever be.

Please, if you like the idea of a Chinchilla, do some research and pricing. They are fun, but they require much more effort then many small animals.

I've listed some links for chinchilla research below. Please enjoy!!

Well, contrary to what another person suggested, i dont think either Rats, Hamsters, Mice or any other 4 legged vermin makes for the ideal pet- im no history buff but they where responsible for the death of thousands in the plague days, you may want to google that one. Heres an idea- how about a dog? maybe even a cat? Give it a shot, its caught on with millions around the world.

Believe it or not, rats are good pets. They are pretty smart, they are affectionate and they are clean (from the pet store of course). This is if you don't want another hamster. My son came home from college with a couple of rats. I was appalled at first, but the sweet little buggars won me over. I am a rat aficionado now! They are really charming!

I was thinking about the same thing, and after a lot of reasearch and thinking about it TONS I decided I wanted a ferret. If you dont think youll be able to handle that try a chinchilla, or a bunny. Other small rodents are cool too. Mice, rats (cool) gerbles, gunni pigs...Its all up to you
Hope I was helpfull
