It could be a number of things, try the inexpensive fixes first. Water is a likely suspect but will not cause the engine to quit when you select drive. A plugged fuel filter will allow the car to start but will not supply enough gas if you accellerate the engine causing it to quit, The idle speed of the engine may be set too low. The extra load on the engine when shifting into drive can cause the engine to stall.

It doesn´t seem to be water anyway. Maybe the main board that controls the electronics settings of the engine regime isn´t working properly. If it was water, the engine would have the same problem on 'park' to. Some times electrical connections starts to fail. A test can be done in all parts of the board to find which one is interrupting the system and then its easy to solve the problem. I sorry but i don´t know how to say in English, but as you find what part has the problem you just have to "glue it again".

A lot of times in the cold weather, engines will flood. If he can get it started, it might not be running on all cylinders. If he can run it at 2000rpms for a couple of minutes, this should clear out the spark plugs. In this weather, use gas line antifreeze or winter gas.

If you havn't needed the car for 2 weeks then why not just sell it "as is". If the BF is using your car then I suspect his car will continue to have problems. Consider getting a better BF!

Your BF's car has a leak at the brakes booster.
he must put a vaccum meter in the intake manifold to see how many inches of vaccum it has.
and with the meter stil on press the brakes pedal to see how much it drop.
if that is OK .then check for leaks at the tranny vaccum modulator.(the hose that goes from the intake manifold to the back of the tranny)

SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IN THE IGNITION SYSTEM NOT GETTING ENOUGH SPARK TO COMPENSATE FOR PUTTING A LOAD ON THE ENGINE. OR FUEL STARVATION.
