DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. You can use this along with a DSL Modem to connect your computer to the Internet. Your telephone company may offer this service as it uses the same line that your telephone line is on.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Subscriber_Line this link should answer your question!!--------DSL or xDSL, is a family of technologies that provide digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network. DSL originally stood for digital subscriber loop, although in recent years, many have adopted digital subscriber line as a more marketing-friendly term for the most popular version of consumer-ready DSL, ADSL.
Typically, the download speed of consumer DSL services ranges from 256 kilobits per second (kbit/s) to 24,000kbit/s, depending on DSL technology, line conditions and service level implemented. Typically, upload speed is lower than download speed for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and equal to download speed for Symmetric Digital

DSL is an acronym for Digital Subscriber Line. It is a service provided by telephone companies to their customers and differs from telephone line service in that it is digital as opposed to voice phone service, which is an analog signal. When you obtain a modem for DSL, it is possible to also have, on the same telephone line (same phone number) a concurrently running voice phone service. Both on the same line are possible because their transmission frequencies are DSL(high) and voice phone (low); so they can both run at the same time. DSL technology is much faster than regular phone modem technology, which peaks at less than 56k speeds and is ultimately a slow digital (PC) to analog (phone line) and analog (phone line) to digital (PC) technology.
[Note: For the high signals of the DSL not to interfere (or be heard on your telephone receiver) you may be required to install a line filter, which prevents the high DSL signals from being heard on the phone speaker.]
In other words, you can be talking on the same phone number as your DSL - while you are viewing websites on the Internet or downloading files. You may also see letters in front of DSL, such as aDSL, which stands for asymetric (or not even) signal speed on the same line. This means that your download speed (which is usually much faster than upload) runs at a different (usually faster) rate than your upload speed (asymetric=not the same on both sides). The telephone companies make the assumption that most of your accessing is downloading, such as web browsing or downloading music or data files. DSL also differs from non-telephone digital signals provided by other broadband (high-speed) providers, such as cable or wireless.

ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. It allows you to simultaneously access the net and use the phone or fax. SDSL stands for Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The different between ADSL and SDSL is SDSL offers the customer symmetric bandwidth upstream and downstream to a customer (eg. 1.5Mbps SDSL tmnet streamyx packages offer the customer 1.5Mbps downstream speed as well as 1.5Mbps upstream speed). Technologically, SDSL does not allow for voice/fax (PSTN) over the same copper cable.
