I have a Toshiba Satellite A105 series laptop and love it.. i upgraded it to 1gb of ram from it's original 512, and it does what I need it to do..
It's light, thin, got a good screen, has wireless as well as ethernet, and modem, and has 4 usb ports... also an extra slot, don't ask me what it's called, for cards, ie wireless cards, and other things..
I added a card reader through a usb port, and to me, it's complete.

I would get an HP/Compaq. I have a HP laptop and a Compaq desktop. I have had the laptop for over 4 years, and it has been very good. I have not had any real issues, I did have to replace my power cord, but I just got one at Circuit city and it was fine.
My desktop, which is a year old, is also very good. I also have an HP printer and HP digital camera. All have worked wonderfully. I have also heard they have good customer service, but I have not needed to use it!
We also have a really "old" (over 5 years) HP desktop, and it has not had any problems. (Other than it is now outdated and "slow" compared to today's machines.)

I've got a compaq and I haven't had a problem w/ it. I say stay away from dell at all costs. Sure they do make a good laptop but when u do run into a problem their tech support is horrible. Trust me I'm a computer tech for a living and you wouldn't believe the trouble I go through doing warrenty work for people who have dell computers. So try Compaq or Gateway. I've had success w/ both.

For the past four years Toshiba has been rated as one of the best laptops in Consumer magazine for price and performance... I've personally used them for over 8 years and I'm a high-end UI Designer and Creative Writer.

Mac book pro, it's light, battery lasts for hours, large memory, great design, built in webcam, amazing pre-installed apps, security wins hands down over windows, but it may be a bit hard to master if your so used to a pc, however...you can run windows on a mac by bringing it up on a seporate window, (two operating systems at a time) win win I supose
