I'm a Spanish speaker. I watch the NFL sometimes and I want to know why the Superbowl is called like that.

While the Lamar Hunt references are good, in addition, this stuck because of the prevalence of "bowl games" in college football. The idea of a Superbowl to describe the meetings of the two professional football leagues in America (the NFL and the AFL) which had just recently merged seemed appropriate to the media and the masses. A "bowl game" which was super seemed to describe such a meeting, placing it above the college bowls and being marketable as well.

The original name of the championship game was the NFL/AFL Championship game. This was until before the 4th Championship when Lamar Hunt refered to it as the Superbowl and it just kind of stuck because everyone thought it sounded corny but good.

I believe the owner of the Chiefs, Lamar Hunt, (who recently passed away), is the first person who is credited with starting the term Superbowl. At the time, his daughter had a ball called the "Superball". It was very popular at the time because it could bounce very high. I had one myself.
It wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd NFL Championship that the term "Superbowl" was used.

Lamar Hunt, who was the AFL Commissioner at the time, 1967, named it, after his kids playing with Super Ball. I'm not kidding.

Lamar Hunt's young son orginally called it the "Super Ball" as in super football...but they changed it to Superbowl-no translation beyond that.

And "Fred C. Dobbs" stole my answer!!! You changed yours after reading mine!! Not fair, but good tactic! :)
