You do what you want, altho I'd pick the specialties of ob/gyn or pediatrician over a primary care physician. Because of managed care nowadays (HMOs mainly), primary care physicians aren't paid much anymore. They might only get $80,000/yr. A nurse can make more than that, especially considering the malpractice insurance costs.

I really wouldn't recommend being a nurse first. You're just wasting a ton of time. You can major in nursing to keep your options open (in case you don't make it to med school), but once you start working, it'll be really hard to stop and go back to school.

Now, if you want to be a doctor, first you need a bachelors degree. Med schools don't care what major you are so ignore the idiots who say "do a pre-med major." There's no such thing which tells you first of all that they have no idea what they're talking about. You need to fulfill the prerequisite classes med schools require (check each med school to see which ones they want). Otherwise, you can take whatever major you want. The majority pick a major in the hard sciences, but an increasing number of med students have degrees in things other than the hard sciences.

If the college has a pre-med program (not major, but a program) that guides you along to make sure you qualify for med schools, that's great. You should also look into joint bachelor/med school programs. Ones where you're guaranteed a spot in the med school if you qualify. Northwestern U has one, among others.

Generally, the path is 4 years undergrad, 4 years med school, then 3+ years of internship and residency. A primary care doc is the easiest to be and takes the shortest amount of time. OB/GYN and pedi take longer and the residencies are harder to get into.
