I've got a bunch of old silver jewelry pieces that I want to melt down and pour into mold.

You can melt silver relatively easily with a high temperature torch. However, in order to ensure that your casting goes well, you need to make sure that your mold is hot (otherwise your metal will cool before filling it) and something that you will be able to easily remove your piece from. Also, make sure that your old silver really is silver. Finally, it is recommended that when casting you use a maximum of %50 old (previously cast) metal--the casting process alters the composition of the metal, so it becomes more porous with each casting.
If you're not sure what to do, consult a professional. Molten metal causes really nasty burns, and an improperly prepared mold can explode. (All of this also applies to your question about gold.)
