I've tried everything from finger-nail polish to WD-40 and GOO-GONE is the absolute best! It smells a heck of a lot better than the other stuff too. It kind of has an orangy citrus smell. It will remove sticker goo, tree sap, and a whole lot more. You can find it with the household cleaners or in the automotive dept. It will pretty much remove anything except dried latex paint. For that you need a product called OOPS, and it's found in the paint department.

The easiest way I've found is to use a hair dryer set on low on the sticky residue. It melts it, and you can usually get it right off. This works really well on old bumper stickers too!

I'll vote with the WD-40 camp. I also like mineral spirits (paint thinner). The acetone in nail polish remover is a powerful solvent, and can damage surface finishes.

If you're not working with cloth or paper, you can spray a little WD40 on a rag and rub it off easily. This also works on skin when you've got that sticky stuff from bandages and tape. Try a little and see.

generally adhesives are organic chemicals so suitable organic solvents can be used. for general purposes acetone works fine.

I'm with Hamish, WD-40 works like a charm, I've never had it not work.
